Prior to retiring from woodworking and going into painting full-time, I completed this reproduction of a
18th century Charleston chest. The original is in the Heyward-Washington house museum. This chest is
made from genuine Caribbean mahogany salvaged from the Virgin Islands after hurricane Hugo in 1989.
Secondary woods are white pine, and solid cypress hand-dovetailed drawers. The brasses are cloned from original period hardware by the lost-wax process. The Thomas Elfe fretwork is hand-made, and all moulding was hand shaped with antique molding planes.
